Should we disclose surgical outcomes data?

Do you want to know how well your hospital is performing?

In some countries there is much higher degree of disclosure of surgeons outcome data. The hospitals publish the statistics of a surgeons activity, and success. It is available for the public to read.

We have had a discussion in New Zealand because the New Zealand Herald asked the Ombudsman to help them obtain data from DHBs.

You can read all about it here. ww.nzherald.co.nz/nz/news/article.cfm?c_id=1&objectid=11665816
Why to we want disclosure? To make good decisions, you need good quality information. It does not matter who you are, hospital administration, surgeons, medical schools or patients. To make good decisions around change, and improvement you need good quality data.

It does not need to be individual, as each department can report collectively. A department is a team of people working together for the same end. They collectively own their results.

At the Waitemata DHB they have started the process of disclosure. Click here to view.  For Head and Neck Cancer patients click through to the Gastro-Oesophageal Surgery results.
